No ordinary stop on your tour of the region, Pulteney Bridge is one of only four bridges in the entire world designed to be lined by shops on both sides. The bridge was built in 1773 for William Pulteney, whose wife had inherited property on the other side of the Avon River, directly across from the city of Bath. Pulteney was something of a visionary, recognizing in the simple village settlement across the water a great potential for becoming a prosperous city suburb. Pulteney hired noted Scottish architect Robert Adam, who based this elegant structure on the bridges he saw and admired in Italy. Stroll across the river at dusk, and photograph the grand old bridge as the sun sets over the landscape. Pulteney Bridge Reviews
We were pleased our free walking tour took us near and over the bridge for lovely views. It doesn't feel like you're on a bridge as you cross over. more »
It is well worth your time to walk on the bridge, if only for the views. It's fun to see the kayakers entering the water as well. This is a beautiful and peaceful place to stop. more »
Great place to stop for a moment and have some time away from everyday struggle. Old structure as it is, can be particularly interesting after dark so bring your camera and apparatus for taking some night photos. Definitely a proper place for a short break.
A must place to visit. Highly recommend has such beautiful views. You can go down by the river for a walk. Eat at a cafe with great views. Lovely place to take photos.
