Sham Castle, Bath

3.4
Sham Castle is a folly on Claverton Down overlooking the city of Bath, Somerset, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. It is a screen wall with a central pointed arch flanked by two 3-storey circular turrets, which extend sideways to a 2-storey square tower at each end of the wall.
It was probably designed around 1755 by Sanderson Miller and built in 1762 by Richard James, master mason for Ralph Allen, "to improve the prospect" from Allen's town house in Bath.
Sham Castle is now illuminated at night.

  • Expected more. If you are up that way worth a look. Parking on the hill then quite a steep walk. Views over Bath.  more »
  • Beautiful view, easy to access, great for a picnic (bring blanket!) and free! Fun for photo opportunity! Just a short drive or walk outside city centre of Bath!  more »

  • Beautiful views of the town Bath. All the castle is now is a front standing wall. There is a trail that leads to some kind of small structure. I don't know the history of this at all. However, it was a great place to visit for free. The road is very steep and a 1 Lane road with small cutouts if a car is coming. So drive safe!
  • It does what it says on the tin. It's a sham castle, so you'll be very disappointed of you want a real castle because this is just the front. Pretty funny and very Bath that they made a false Castle to look fancy though.
