The Underfall Yard is a historic boatyard on Spike Island serving Bristol Harbour, the harbour in the city of Bristol, England.Plan to visit Underfall Yard and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Bristol attractions using our Bristol day trip app.
Underfall Yard was commonly referred to as "The Underfalls" and takes its name from the underfall sluices. The original construction was completed in 1809 under the direction of William Jessop and substantially improved by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 1830s.
Restored in the 1990s, Underfall Yard has been designated as a scheduled monument and from the 1970s onward many of the buildings at Underfall Yard have earned Grade II Listed Building status. The harbour and its equipment are still actively maintained, and house a cooperative of maritime companies.
Underfall Yard Reviews
At the lower end of the floating harbour this little industrial museum punches above its weight. The staff and volunteers have a positive approach and there is a good cafe on site more »
Very interesting for all the family, pump room, history of harbour and pumps still working. Models and small museum with helpful volunteers to tell you morw more »
We we're lucky enough to see the pumps working. Had a wonderful couple of hours here. Steve was excellent in giving his time and showing us all the workings (helped by young Felix). Please enjoy an afternoon here well worth a visit especially if history and engineering are your thing.
A piece of little known history with both the pumping station and the working traditional boat yard. Also a great food and coffee stop for anybody circumnavigating the Docks on foot or bike. Pickles has a great outside space with which gives a different perspective of the harbour.
