Historian Norman Pounds has deemed Caerphilly Castle "a turning point in the history of the castle in Britain." The large gatehouses, which break up the 12 hectare (30 acre) property, and the castle’s concentric walls mark a change in castle construction in England. Manmade lakes once surrounded the 13th-century structure but were drained in the 16th century. An extensive restoration in the 18th century brought the property back to its former glory. The artificial lakes were re-flooded in the 1950s. Note the 14th-century court decor in the great hall. • Beautiful castle with lots of interesting history. The largest castle in Wales and second largest in Britain. Dogs welcome and there is a cafe and toilets on site. You can walk on the walls and up into the towers for great views of Caerphilly. The signs are great and interesting to read and engaging for kids. Having the different weapons they used on display is fun too. Lovely walk round the grounds too. Defintely recommended for a visit!
  • Absolutely beautiful place! So happy I went. Me and my boyfriend had a picnic in the grounds before exploring. It is so big so there is a lot of castle to explore and the views are amazing! Will definitely be returning!
