The Historic Dockyard Chatham stands as the world's most complete dockyards from the Age of Sail, the period from the 16th to the 19th century when ships dominated trade and warfare. Explore 32 hectares (80 acres) containing warships, museums, and historic buildings. Head into the steam, steel, and submarines exhibit to learn the history of the dockyard through photos, artifacts, and models. Take audio-guided tours of the HMS Gannet (1878) and the HMS Cavalier (1944) and follow a guide around HM Submarine Ocelot (1962) to learn the roles of these warships in the Royal Navy. Visit the ropery with a costumed guide to see what a Victorian factory was like. If you get hungry, eat at the on-site restaurant serving locally sourced food or bring your own picnic. And if it rains, you can bring your food into the railway workshop, which also contains an indoor playground for children. Incredible museum with so much to do. The tours are amazingly informative. I loved walking around a real life submarine, and there's another war ship to look round too. The restaurant is very nice and there's a separate cafe. You certainly need more than a day to do everything. One of the best places to visit in Kent.
Always have a great time here. So much to see and do, and very interesting! It's amazing to have all that history on your doorstep. Great for families but also nice to visit on your own. Can't recommend it enough and it is excellent value for money.
