Regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, Durham Cathedral was founded in 1093 to replace an earlier church, which housed the shrine of Saint Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Today, the cathedral’s treasures include relics of Saint Cuthbert, the head of Saint Oswald of Northumbria, and the remains of the Venerable Bede. The cathedral’s library contains one of the most complete sets of early printed books in England. Stop by for a daily Church of England service, or climb the cathedral’s iconic central tower, rising to 66 m (217 ft) and offering sweeping views of the city and the surrounding area. Durham Cathedral Reviews
Disappointed after arriving with 30 school children for a unexpected quick look around and were refused entry unless we made a “voluntary” contribution per child. We offered a contribution which was.... more »
Absolutely beautiful cathedral and such warming welcoming staff! We spent a good few hours here. Dig deep and make sure you contribute! more »
Excellent! I'm not Christian, but I am fascinated by churches. Durham Cathedral is my favorite that I have visited. The architecture is absolutely stunning. Durham is a beautiful town to begin with, and the cathedral only adds to the town's beauty. There are amazing historical artwork, statues, and overall architectural beauty. They also have a wonderful WWII memorial outside of the cathedral entrance where you can create a memorial marker for fallen soldiers.
Loved the newish stained glass windows, divine. The Lego cathedral is incredible, has little model people inside. Shop very good. Cafe was very hot, tables too close together. Overall a good experience, preferred the cafe outside on the green though. The interior of the cathedral and what it contains is mind blowing!
