Ely Cathedral, Ely

#1 of 28 in Things to do in Ely
Must see · Religious Site · Architectural Building
Known locally as "The Ship of the Fens" because of its prominent shape towering over the surrounding flat and watery landscape, Ely Cathedral offers guided tours of its iconic Octagon Tower. The tour provides detailed insight into the history of the cathedral, which was built between 1083 and 1375. Climb the cathedral’s spiral staircase on a clear day to take in sweeping views of the area, with the Cambridge University Library’s tower visible in the distance. The cathedral hosts regular concerts and temporary exhibitions, and is home to a museum of stained glass, displaying windows made over a span of 800 years. Don’t forget to pick up a souvenir of your visit at the cathedral’s well-stocked gift shop. • Brilliant architecture with strong Norman influences. There are a lot of beautiful glowing stained glass windows. The vaulted ceiling is beautifully painted. It is a vast, huge Cathedral that makes you catch your breath and look up and up and up. Even for people of no faith, the soul is uplifted in a place where people have aspired and longed to be better for hundreds of years. It seems like something good has become part of the whole structure. Definitely worth a visit.
  • One of the best cathedrals in the country. rather pricey to be frank but the tours are great. An odd mixture of different eras (not too difficult to spot the Victorian adds-on!) but an absolute bliss, whether you go for spiritual rest of artistic/historical curiosity. Worth a visit. But make it cheaper!
