Highlandman's Umbrella, Glasgow

1.0
Highlandman's Umbrella serves as the nickname for this railway bridge over Argyle Street, which supports platforms of Glasgow Central Station. The glass-walled bridge earned the nickname by acting as the meeting place for some of the 30,000 Scottish Gaelic-speaking Highlanders who were displaced in the 19th century during the second phase of the Highland clearances. These people spread throughout the city to find work, but continued to meet under the bridge, especially on weekends. Glasgow's rainy weather eventually led to the attraction's local nickname. By now the displaced have integrated fully and the landmark's nickname is not as well known among the younger generation. For travelers who use our online itinerary creator, Glasgow holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Highlandman's Umbrella and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The place is a bit dark. But I think it is part of Glasgow's scene. This is a passage under an iron structure. On the top train tracks. It is super old and very interesting to see how it was made. if....  more »
  • A nice landmark, awesome engineering, and does stand out, worth taking the hop on hop off bus, to see it, if other reviews are correct. Still worth a look.  more »
