#22 of 49 in Shopping in Glasgow
The Kelvin Hall, located on Argyle Street in Glasgow, Scotland, is one of the largest exhibition centres in Britain and now a mixed-use arts and sports venue that opened as an exhibition venue in 1927. It has also been used as a concert hall, home to the Kelvin Hall International Sports Arena to 2014, and from 1987 to 2010, Glasgow's Museum of Transport. As part of the economic redevelopment of Greater Glasgow promoted by the Scottish Development Agency and local authorities to enhance the city's tourist infrastructure and to attract further national and international conferences, the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre was designed as the Hall's successor for exhibitions and entertainments, built and opened on the nearby Queen's Dock in 1985 with an exhibition area equal in size to the Kelvin Hall but with the benefit of extensive car parks and land for other complementary buildings.

The Hall is protected as a category B listed building, and is served by city bus services and by Kelvinhall subway station.

Redevelopment of the Kelvin Hall is under way with the first element, occupying part of the area, opened in September 2016, containing art, cultural and health and fitness activities promoted in a partnership of Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Life, the University of Glasgow, and the National Library of Scotland.

  • Really disappointing Clip n Climb, not cheap £10 each and extra £2 for leap of faith. Video is really misleading as the small print does state it is not the Kelvin Hall venue but my kids did not...  more »
  • I took my toddler to the new soft play this afternoon. It is divided into two sections (with no barriers between them), one for children 2-5 and the other for 5-12. But no one warned me of this as we....  more »

  • i love this place, the National Library part is where I go. It's excellent and normally very quiet. It seems to me to be the West Ends best kept secret. I'm often in there on my own , apart from the 2 or 3 staff. I only go on Friday's so I can't speak for other days. The archive films which are accessible from numerous comfortable individual stations are brilliant. I've revisited my childhood numerous times. If you haven't been then GO, you won't be disappointed.
  • Great experience for kids and Adults. This is a welcome addition to the list of activities for kids to do in Glasgow. We have done similar climbing activities in Center Pacs and this was just as fun. The space allocated for it has been used well. You book in advance so it's not over crowded. The staff where really helpful and friendly. It's right next to the soft play and cafe so there was something for the younger kids to do whole big brothers and sisters and climbing. You need to register your kids as glasgow club members before you go.
