Originally opened in 1898 as a recreation space and museum, since the 1940s, People's Palace and Winter Gardens has been a museum for the social history of Glasgow. Inside the Victorian architecture, you'll find the stories of the city's people from 1750 to present day. Explore the winter gardens, where lush foliage thrives all year long protected from the damp weather outside. The main building's interior commemorates Glasgow's history in murals and panels. For example, the domed ceiling displays a series of panels by Ken Currie depicting the Calton Weavers’ Massacre of 1787. Outside you'll find the Doulton Fountain, the largest terracotta fountain in the world. People's palace is a great asset to the city. There's loads in it which shows you about life in Glasgow from years gone by. Our kids love it too. It is definitely missing the Winter Gardens at the moment, but here's hoping that it gets fixed and is open again in the near future.
I love the People's Palace. I always take visitors here. A wee botanical gardens with a cafe downstairs. Go upstairs and you have the history of Glasgow. Everything from an ancient jail to Billy Connolly's banana boots 😂. There's A booth made into an old Glesga home, showing how it used to be. A few interactive things for kids. My daughter used to love coming here as a kid. Always recommend a visit. It's free with donations, please give what you can. ❤
