#1 of 177 in Nightlife in Glasgow
Opened in September of 2013, The SSE Hydro was constructed to host international music stars and major sporting events. Designed by renowned architectural firm Foster+Partners, the venue has a seating capacity of over 12,000 people. Built to receive over 1 million annual visitors, the site now competes with other world-class arenas, including Madison Square Garden and The O2 Arena, for the title of one of the world’s busiest entertainment venues. The distinctive elliptical sloping shape of the venue was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman amphitheaters, providing visitors with an ideal viewing angle toward the stage and offering state-of-the-art acoustics. Check the arena’s website for a detailed calendar of upcoming events, and save time and money by booking your tickets well in advance. • Immediately drawing comparisons with Sydney’s Opera House, this building has become one of Glasgow’s iconic images since 1997. The SEC Armadillo contributes to a highly futuristic postcode that also includes the neighbouring The SSE Hydro (a gigantic flying saucer) and the SEC. The epicentre of the concert scene in the city, Foster’s style is a far cry from the sandstone jungle to be found in the nearby west end. Tradition was not to be ignored however as the layered exterior design was created to represent interlocking hulls of ships – a nod to Glasgow’s shipbuilding past.
  • Great venue - went to see George Ezra and Sigrid. From seated area we could still see the full show from very comfy seats. Great that there are so many vendors (all same prices throughout arena from what I saw) and toilets.
