Clink Prison Museum, London

3.5
#38 of 257 in Museums in London
The oldest prison in England, operating between the 12th and the 18th centuries, Clink Prison Museum is where the slang term "the clink" originates. The museum recreates the life of prisoners through decorated cells and dungeon-like accommodations. Listen for the loud "clink" of the metal doors that gave the prison its nickname. Discover how both men and women were treated over the prison’s long history. Plan my trip to London with suggested itineraries provided by Inspirock.

  • We originally wandered past this museum back in April 2018 on our way to the Globe. But made the decision that when we were back in London, we would definitely pay it a visit. I'm really glad we did. ...  more »
  • What an education. The Bishop of Winchester’s grisly prison wrath. Don’t expect the London Dungeon or Madame Tussaud - there’s no queue for this little gem on Clink Street. A privately owned, inspired...  more »

  • If your a fan of the more ghoulish and gruesome side of history then this might be the place for you. If you have been to the London dungeons or the London bridge experience this is the same type of history (minus the live actors) and should be to your taste. As this is set in the original prison it has plenty of atmosphere and is able to show many of the torture devices that were used (a surprising amount were hands on as well). It is a self guided tour and should take about an hour and at only £8 per adult is reasonable priced for London. Beware as it is an old building it is in no way disabled friendly.
  • What more could you ask to entertain almost teen boys... Gore, torture and the macabre! Not a huge museum but very atmospheric and the "Gaol Keeper" was one of the best guides I've come across, clearly someone who loves their job! Would highly recommend and under £20 for a family ticket is great value in Central London.
