Charlton sandpits, which were originally part of an area known as Hanging Wood, were presented to the London County Council in 1891 by the Maryon-Wilson family, and one of the pits became Maryon Park. Another pit became Charlton Athletic's football ground, The Valley.
The park was originally wooded and, together with what is now Maryon Wilson Park, was known as Hanging Woods. This was a wild wooded area and formed an ideal retreat for highwaymen who robbed travellers on Shooters Hill and Blackheath. Those who were caught were hanged here – hence the name.
The park contains grassland, with hawkweed, gorse and broom.

We stopped here after checking out the animal park to the south and before heading to the football at The Valley. Pretty little park with good views more »
Maryon Park is a little gem of a place. It is hidden between residential streets and council flats. The entrance by which I enter is easy to miss and most would not think to venture in that particular area unless you are a resident but the trip is worth it. The park is well kept and has varying charms depending on what time of the day you visit. I arrive early in the Morning with the joggers and early birds. I was immediately enchanted by the nostalgia it gave me. I use Maryon park a lot as my baby daughter finds it soothing taking a stroll through the grounds. You must definitely visit.
it's a little bit of country side that you can just walk see the animals in a built up area it's calming it's beautifil
