  • There are a lot of beautiful images in London and Sir John Betjeman is definitely a nice start and the trouble to get to go up on arrival in St. Pancras.

  • The statue shows Betjemen as slightly larger than life. He is wearing in suit, mackintosh and trilby hat. His left hand holding tightly onto his hat to stop it falling off as he gazes up at the roof. The statue really captures his irrelevant, fun and playful nature.
  • Betjeman was one of the most energetic figures who, in the 1960s, fought the destruction of St Pancras - mercifully unthinkable today.  Standing on the platform is a larger-than-lifesize statue of poet John Betjeman by Martin Jennings. Betjeman had been the driving force behind efforts to save the site when it was threatened by development plans during the 1960s and the sculpture stands as a tribute from London and Continental Railways to the man who made their redevelopment of the station possible. The completed work was jointly unveiled on 12th November by Betjeman's daughter Candida Lycett-Green and Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. Around the base of the statue are carved lines from Betjeman poems, chosen by Jennings, including: "Here where the cliffs alone prevail. I stand exultant, neutral, free,/ And from the cushion of the gale. Behold a huge consoling sea."
