Saffron Walden Museum is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in the country. Our family-friendly museum explores the archaeology, natural history and social history of north-west Essex and the wider world.

With a packed programme of special exhibitions, events and activities throughout the year, as well as nine permanent galleries, there's always something to see and do!

Set in quiet grounds next to the ruins of the twelfth-century Walden Castle, just minutes away from the historic market town of Saffron Walden, the museum is the perfect place to explore our district.

    We were impressed by the care that has been put into this museum. So much to look at, wonderful sections on the history of the area and thatching... The country life area is special too . Everything is well thought out and child friendly too, lots of hands- on learning to be had !!
