Experience the lifestyle of English royalty at Walmer Castle and Gardens, a former artillery fort constructed by Henry VIII. The fort consisted of a keep and four circular bastions surrounded by a moat, built to defend the strategically important coastal areas against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. In the 18th century the military fortification became a private residence with extensive landscaped gardens. In the early 20th century, the castle and its grounds opened to the public. Pick up an informative audio guide at the entrance, and stop at the tea room for some sandwiches and scones. Nice to visit, not so much because of the architecture of the place, but only for interior reconstructions that show in the past, those of the Duke of Wellington. We visited the grounds due to the incessant rain. A bar-restaurant serves an excellent cream tea.

Lovely castle to visit on an afternoon. Visited with 3 little ones to do the Easter Egg hunt and had a great time. A bit smaller than what we expected, but the most beautiful grounds. Would visit again if other events or trails were on.
The gardens are rather nice and pretty extensive. The castle is impressive but there is not a lot of it open on the ground floor, about half the area is taken up by the restaurant. I did not go upstairs because I was in my wheelchair. This is a national heritage place so if you are a member you will get in free.
