We always take our visitors to this Museum. There is so much to see and we always find different things there that we hadn't noticed before. We have attended many great functions at the museum ranging from a ghost story evening to fun music presentations. Sometimes we visit just for a coffee and a slice of delicious home made cake. A definite jewel in Wantage's crown.
Excellent town museum, a must for anyone new to Wantage: resident or visitor. Gone are the days of stuffy museums full of dark cabinets groaning with repetitive catalogued items. But for my money some museums go to far with their 'interactive' displays and minimal objects, sacrificing greater content for glossy substance. The Vale and Downland Museum Wantage though, has a nice mix of the two. From the two c.10 minute video presentations at the start (informative but not too heavy about the history of the area, narrated by David Attenborough) to brought-to-life exhibits and 'place' settings bringing aspects of the towns past to life, through to child-centric play/learning exhibits (especially those on the 1st floor area). There is more here than might be imagined from standing outside looking at the entrance. The front foyer area is split between a shop selling unusual, good quality mostly local themed gifts. A large cafe area, suitable for, and often frequented by buggy pushing mums with toddlers and infants. And with an extensive information wall full of every possible what's on pamphlet and poster, local walks and literature. The whole museum has a feeling of a place very much looked after by those responsible. And Wantage should be proud to have such a well presented resource.
