Winchester Cathedral, Winchester

Must see · Church · Landmark
Winchester Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals in England, with a nave that's one of the longest in all of Europe. The blend of Norman and Gothic architecture is a sight to behold. Underneath the ornate arches, a collection of memorials and artwork spans centuries. The haphazard appearance of the stained glass in the west window is a result of the destruction wrought by Oliver Cromwell's forces during the English Civil War. In 1660, the broken glass was gathered up and rearranged randomly. Look for the flooded crypt, where a statue called Sound II looks as if it is floating on top of the water. Note the Russian Orthodox influence of the St. Smithun's Memorial, designed by Sergei Fyodorov. • Cathedral is very nice however tickets are expensive for what there is to see. The grounds are great and there are other things to see around the cathedral . Worth a visit but beware of cost .  more »

  • I absolutely love the Cathedral. It used to be one of my favourite places when I was a child. The history is fascinating and the building itself is beautiful. The gardens are stunning and looked after. An absolutely gorgeous place to spend a couple of hours with family or friends.
  • I was little underwhelmed by the venue Maybe me but I expected given its reputation and history a bit more. The entry fee of £9.50 for a concetion which I thought reasonable in today's world and we were given a guide which was very informative and appreciated. No restriction on photo's as some venues have. All in all a pleasant experience and the entry ticket valid for a year which is common now a days.
