Southampton — 1 day

Southampton, on the south coast of England, is the largest city in the ceremonial county of Hampshire. Start off your visit on the 5th (Sun): steep yourself in history at Hospital of St Cross, get in on the family fun at Paultons Park, then browse the exhibits of Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and finally test your problem-solving skills at popular escape rooms.

To find reviews, where to stay, photos, and tourist information, you can read our Southampton trip planner.

London to Southampton is an approximately 2-hour car ride. You can also take a train; or take a bus. Expect a daytime high around 22°C in June, and nighttime lows around 12°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 5th (Sun) early enough to drive back home.

Famous for evoking images of the rural landscapes of Jane Austen's novels, Hampshire also features numerous bustling seaside resorts and two of England’s largest ports, Southampton and Portsmouth. These thriving cities not only attract history hounds with a multitude of attractions celebrating the country’s maritime heritage, but they also feature modern wharfs packed with trendy restaurants, shops, and bars. The energy of Hampshire’s big cities is contrasted by secluded corners of tranquility found deep in the countryside, where idyllic villages seemingly frozen in time make marvellous places to visit that preserve the old-world charm unique to this part of England.
