Chester Cathedral stands as a fine example of an English monastic church. It features New Red Sandstone in its construction, creating a pinkish hue on the outside and inside. Take a tour of the cathedral, which the cathedral offers for free but asks for a small donation. Pay special attention to the stained glass of the West Window, the Nave Mosaics dating to about 1880, and the organ with 4,894 pipes. Your guide will point out all of the cathedral's significant architectural details, some of which extend back to about 1100. If you're in good shape, go up to the Cathedral at Height exhibition in the bell tower. Inside the bell-ringing chamber, you'll be up close to the stained-glass windows, with views over the town. As this is a functioning church, you're also welcome to attend services. Great cathedral. Once an abbey so lots of buildings outside the cathedral. The cathedral has been heavily restored in the Victorian period but still lovely. And also has some rather good modern art as well. Has good loos and an amazing cafe in what I assume was the old abbey refectory. Don't miss the cloisters.

A beautiful old cathedral in the heart of the city of Chester. If you visit around Christmas time, the Christmas market will be around the cathedral area, adding to the wonder of this unique place. The air filled with aromas of food and mulled wine, scent's and grilled food. The Cathedral is an ancient building, the interior is very special, and if you have the time, sit down on one of the old stone benches and meditate, you will be filled with a sense of peace. Enjoy this wonderful building, but, did you know Chester had an even older Cathedral, check out St John's, by the Amphitheatre, completing a wonderful day out. Enjoy.
