Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways
Along the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways, enjoy one of the UK's most scenic train rides. Founded in 1832, this is the world's oldest railway company according to the Guinness Book of World Records. You'll travel 21.7 km (13.5 mi) from the harbor at Porthmadog to the slate-mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog, passing through the forests and mountains of Snowdonia National Park along the way. The steam locomotive and heritage cars behind it gain 213 m (700 ft) of altitude along the journey, making numerous tight turns and even completing a full spiral. The windows are large and clear, so keep your camera ready for landscape shots throughout the journey. A stunning journey through spectacular scenery. Staff are great, food was good. Not the cheapest journey, but a great experience.

If steam trains are your thing then this is a lovely couple of hours with gorgeous scenery between Porthmadog & Ffestiniog. Definitely worth picking up a guide book (was cash only on Easter Sunday) and having a look through before the train leaves the station. Recommend booking tickets before you go. There wasn't much time when you got to Ffestiniog to explore but we did pop to the little cafe and picked up a light bite to eat. You can take food and drinks onto the train if you want too but I don't believe there are toilets on board.
