Fairfax House was created in 1762 to be a townhouse for the powerful Fairfax family during York’s winter social season. It was also intended to be a dowry for the Fairfaxes' daughter, Anne, although she remained unmarried. Though extensively adapted in the 20th century as a movie theater and dance hall, Fairfax House has been returned to its former glory for you to explore. As you roam through the house, be transported to the splendor of city living in Georgian York with one of the finest collections of English 18th-century furniture in the world. Discover the tastes and fashions of the day for architecture, interior design, and food, and the customs and habits of York’s elite. If you have young ones to entertain, children’s trail guides are available from reception. The tour guides were great, they took time to explain the history of the house and the Fairfax family. We came across fairfax house by chance but what a great find this hidden treasure was.

Very interesting house with a history. Guide was very knowledgeable and clearly enthusiastic about the place. Some nice examples of the period furniture and wonderful ceilings. Interesting facts about how catholics had to live at that time. Fairfax family ties to the saving of the Minster from sacking by parliamentarian army.

Amazing Georgian style house museum 👌. The volunteers working in there are super friendly and knowledge. It was an absolute joy to go there. Didn't see any toilet facilities.
